Mother & Child

These drawings are made by drawing from life.

The Madonna and Child genre is often a bit 'staged' and formal, so  I'm trying to show casual, informal moments between mother and child.

I don't want to be cloying or autobiographical, but through the particular one can relate to the universal.

A lot of art and painting today is conceptual or clever with hard hitting, often sceptical or cynical knowingness and quick to digest catchiness. So here is an excuse to make something gentle with honest feeling: How can a contemporary picture show intimacy and tenderness?

I love the little Titian painting of the mother and child in The National Gallery London because you don't notice the anatomical distortion of the bodies and how subtly Titian does this to give us intimacy and tenderness between mother and infant.
